I have to be honest.
Every time i hear a reference to Mark Macon, I think of this minor league hockey team.
But tonight we really say Whoopee.
That's right. a member of the Binghamton University athletic department will go on camera! I FEEL SHOCKED!
It's hard to tell if Macon will answer questions or just read a statement. Interim AD Jim Norris is supposed to be interviewed. At 9:30 at night.
I suppose that's better than the midnight e-mails the school sent last weekend, but not much.

A Day In The Life

To quote a great newsman, "Boy, that escalated quickly... I mean, that really got out of hand fast."
In case you missed it Binghamton Colonials (let's all put this Bearcats thing behind us, eh?) basketball coach Kevin Broadus was put on a "paid leave of absence.
So what does that mean? Let's read between the lines:
From interim AD Jim Norris:
“There have been continuing incidents of concern related to the men’s basketball program that do not measure up to the University’s high standards."
YES, I NOTICED THAT HE MESSED UP AGAIN. BREAKING NCAA RULES IS BAD. IT'S WORSE WHEN YOU'RE ALREADY IN TROUBLE.
"After discussions with President DeFleur and Vice President Van Voorst, earlier today I placed Coach Broadus on paid leave of absence from his head coaching duties until further notice."
HE'S NOT FIRED BECAUSE WE'D HAVE TO PAY HIM. SO HE'S JUST NOT GOING TO BE AROUND HERE ANYMORE....
"Additionally, Coach Broadus has assured me of his cooperation with the upcoming athletic program audit being conducted by Judge Kaye."
...BUT DON'T GO TOO FAR.
"Assistant Coach Mark Macon will assume the duties of head coach on an interim basis. He is an excellent coach and I have every confidence in his ability to provide strong leadership to the team."
GOOD LUCK BUD. YOU'RE GONNA NEED IT.
"Our players have worked very hard in preparing for the upcoming season and I am looking forward to working with Mark in guiding the basketball program in a positive and successful direction.”
WE REALIZE THIS SEASON IS SHOT. JUST DON'T GET IN ANY MORE TROUBLE. PLEASE. I'M BEGGING YOU. PLEASE.
Broadus is done at Binghamton. He'll be around to answer for all that has gone wrong (and clearly there is a lot of that.) And when the investigation is done (2 weeks, 2 months?) he's out officially.
I'm sure Binghamton is hoping he just walks away, but more than likely a settlement will be reached (this may be the last real good paycheck Broadus can earn as a coach.)
Macon may get the chance to follow him long term. And that may be a good thing. He does a lot of recruiting, has ties to Philadelphia and played in the NBA.
But very little will be paid to that aspect, since the school continues to butcher the other side, that being Broadus and his program.
(we are 4 weeks removed from "Tiki" Mayben's 2nd arrest, and still no interviews with the old AD, the new AD, Broadus or Macon.....4 WEEKS!!!)
And still to come, the reason why the 5 other players were booted.
This story will go on for months now, well into the new basketball season. Maybe beyond that. And it shouldn't. But that's for another time.

Heard any Good BU Jokes Lately?
There was a time that Boston University people and Binghamton University people debated the proper use of "BU". Well Boston has won those rights as the NY Post has given Binghamton a more proper "UNLV East" tag.
In case you missed it (and if you're actually reading this blog I doubt it) here's a summary.
And that's the headline I've been using all along.
Worst case scenario.
I mean does it get worse that reaching the pinnacle and then plummeting to the depths of NCAA hell?
I submit that it does not.
And to be a little selfish, the university couldn't have handled this worse. No one is available for comment.
rumors a swirling that coach Kevin Broadus has quit.
They send official statements and press releases at midnight (or :30 seconds after we are off the air, whichever comes first.)
Announcements that Mayben was kicked off the team come days after he's arraigned on drug charges.
And investigations are still on-going as to the 5 other players kicked off the team.
Good times.

Did I Mention Shaun O'Hara is The Coolest Giant?
So you watched the Chris Snee video, right?
And you want more right?
Well.....have at it.
If I had my choice, I would only interview professional football lineman for the rest of my career.
Seriously,...college graduates that joke around and at times seem genuinely excited to get interviewed? What's not to like?

Pet Peeves
It's true, there are many things that annoy me.
People that write your when they mean you're. Or its instead of it's. Their instead of they're.
But there is a sports connection.
I hate, and I mean hate when an analyst uses the word "a" to describe a single player.
Here's an example: " The Orioles organization has been able to produce some talent, like a Nick Markakis or a Jim Johnson...."
It's particularly common when trade talks are swirling, and an analyst says a team could really use a player like "a" Cliff Lee.
Good lord, what is the "A" for?
If you read this, you will now hear it every time you are stuck listening to sports talk radio, or basically any show on ESPN.
Enjoy.

Bearcat Stuff

Since it seems to be the biggest thing people stop by here for, how about some BU news.
Saw the team out at a men's soccer game this week.
It's obvious they all get along, and that's good to see. Could mean really good things to come.
Some Bearcat fans get blasted here with talk of back-to-back titles and a turning of the tide in the A.E. conference. And while it's early to start flashing those goofy dynasty hand signs, they are not alone in thinking that way.
In case you missed it, that was Binghamton ranked 28th in the freaking country. Ahead of Georgetown (I'd like to point out to my West Virginia reader).
Ahead of Syracuse (I'd like to point out to my co-workers).
And ahead of every other A.E. team.
And there is news for years to come.
Looks like a great stop-gap for when the Big 3 graduate after the coming season.

The Post Where Chris Snee Is A Big Deal
(You must be a Giants fan to enjoy the following)
He is around here.
Snee anchors the line for the NY Giants and jokes about his involvement in the most famous play in Super Bowl history. Watch the clip to see how much #76 does...
We have a follow up to this, and again, you would enjoy it more if you rooted for the G-Men.
Shaun O'Hara is my new favorite Giant....that's all I'm saying.
And on a programming note, you can see all this stuff in a much more edited and well produced form on 9/10 at 7:30 on WBNG. So watch then too.
